SUMMARY: In the summer of 2019, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture recognized, for the first time, the status of “singular” for 84 superb DO Rioja vineyard sites to be now classified as Viñedos Singulares. These are ancient vineyards, farmed manually and continuously by the same family for at least ten years, adhering to strict yield limits and most importantly, the resultant wines must pass — not one, but two — evaluations by the Rioja board with a quality score of excellent, after fermentation and before their release to the market. Rioja wines with this designation represent the pinnacle of grape-to-glass winemaking, not only in Spain, but throughout the world of wine. Comparatively, a Viñedo Singular is the equivalent of a Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy and eleven of these vineyards belong to Bodegas Valdelana. Juan's first releases — from the 2020 vintage — come from seven of his vineyards... the level of expertise, craftsmanship and quality of their wines never ceases to amaze. These wines can be found some of the best restaurants in the world like Arzak, Martín Berasategui, Celler de Can Roca, Echaurren, Jose Andrés, Es Tragón, DiverXo etc....

The vineyard dates back to 1930, a testament to heroic viticulture as it was planted on a rugged rock, without arable land. This exceptional site, known as Senda de las Damas, was once a popular spot for leisurely strolls and courtships. It was a place where people would come dressed in their finest attire, well-groomed and presentable—privileges afforded only by the town’s affluent, the Lords and Ladies.

Positioned on an elevated platform near alluvial soils with ancient, tertiary deposits, the vineyard benefits from very low aquifer vulnerability and limited permeability due to the soil's natural porosity.

AGE OF THE VINEYARD: Over 85 years of age.

SOIL: Grain-bone detrital rock with calcareous sandstones, siltstones and red argillites. 600 meters altitude.

CLIMATE: Mediterranean with continental reflection.

ELABORATION: Traditional production using carbonic maceration, intracellular fermentation with the whole grain and without crushing. Spontaneous fermentation in open casks. Aged for 1 year in the same casks where the alcoholic fermentation took place.

TASTING NOTES

OLFACTORY PHASE: The wine presents a distinct mineral character, reflecting its mountainous terroir. The nose evokes the sensation of walking through a botanical garden, enriched with aromas of various shrub species. This is complemented by subtle spicy notes and hints of incense, creating a complex and aromatic bouquet that is both captivating and layered.

TASTE PHASE: On the palate, the wine is distinctly exotic, offering a spongy texture that enhances its fruity profile. It carries forward the coniferous, mossy, and fern-like notes experienced on the nose, providing a unique and refreshing character. The wine's substantial body adds to its originality, delivering a distinguished and memorable taste that stands apart.

SERVING TEMPERATURE: Between 16°C and 18°C.

GASTRONOMY: This wine pairs beautifully with dishes that reflect its bold, exotic, and herbaceous profile. Ideal with grilled meats such as lamb or venison, it complements their rich flavors and smoky char. It also enhances earthy dishes like wild mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with grilled or smoked fish, especially those with herbal marinades. The wine’s complexity makes it an excellent match for aged cheeses, particularly those with a robust character like blue cheese or aged Manchego. The Visual Experience (Visual Phase)

Begin by examining the wine in your glass. Observe its color - is it pale straw, golden, ruby, or deep purple? Notice its clarity - a clear, bright wine often signals quality. Swirl the glass gently, watching its transparency and how it catches the light. Each of these visual cues can hint at the wine’s age, grape variety, or even its origin!

Pay attention to the wine legs - the streaks that form on the inside of the glass after swirling. While they don’t indicate quality, they can reveal the wine’s alcohol and sugar content. Watching how the legs form and flow offers clues about the wine's richness and body, enhancing your appreciation before the first sip.
