SUMMARY: In the summer of 2019, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture recognized, for the first time, the status of “singular” for 84 superb DO Rioja vineyard sites to be now classified as Viñedos Singulares. These are ancient vineyards, farmed manually and continuously by the same family for at least ten years, adhering to strict yield limits and most importantly, the resultant wines must pass — not one, but two — evaluations by the Rioja board with a quality score of excellent, after fermentation and before their release to the market. Rioja wines with this designation represent the pinnacle of grape-to-glass winemaking, not only in Spain, but throughout the world of wine. Comparatively, a Viñedo Singular is the equivalent of a Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy and eleven of these vineyards belong to Bodegas Valdelana. Juan's first releases — from the 2020 vintage — come from seven of his vineyards... the level of expertise, craftsmanship and quality of their wines never ceases to amaze. These wines can be found some of the best restaurants in the world like Arzak, Martín Berasategui, Celler de Can Roca, Echaurren, Jose Andrés, Es Tragón, DiverXo etc....

The vineyard dates back to 1920, The vineyard is located next to the Leza Sanatorium. The name of the estate "La Medika" is a tribute to a woman who worked as a doctor. Her dedication, professionalism and goodwill made her remembered by all patients and family members affected by tuberculosis.

ELABORATION: The Viñedo Singular Finca La Medika 2021 is crafted using traditional winemaking methods, with an emphasis on carbonic maceration. This technique involves intracellular fermentation of the whole grapes, without crushing, allowing for a spontaneous fermentation process in open casks. This natural fermentation approach preserves the purity of the fruit and enhances the aromatic complexity of the wine. After fermentation, the wine is aged for one year in the same casks where the alcoholic fermentation took place, which imparts a subtle oak influence and contributes to the wine’s depth and character.

TASTING NOTES

VISUAL PHASE: The wine presents a vibrant cherry red color with a delicate violet meniscus, showcasing its clarity and brilliance. The wine is clean and bright, reflecting its refined production and attention to detail.

OLFACTORY PHASE: The wine is powerful and expressive on the nose, revealing a distinct herbal profile. Aromas of rosemary and lavender intertwine with intriguing sweet spices such as cumin and a hint of hemp, adding complexity and depth to the aromatic experience.

TASTE PHASE: On the palate, the wine offers nuanced fruit notes, including the richness of figs and dates, while the retronasal experience evokes the essence of raspberry and plum jam. It is fresh, with a vibrant, electric acidity that is perfectly balanced by the wine's tannic concentration. The texture is fine and elegant, showcasing its tremendously original character. This wine stands out as very unique, with a remarkable profile that is both distinctive and refined.

SERVING TEMPERATURE: Between 16°C and 18°C.

GASTRONOMY: This wine's complex profile and unique character pair beautifully with equally sophisticated cuisine. Its herbal and fruity notes make it an excellent match for grilled lamb or roast venison, where the richness of the meat complements the wine’s electric acidity and tannic structure. It also pairs well with mature cheeses like Manchego or Idiazábal, which enhance the wine's complexity.
